Volunteer

Westminster Boating Base relies heavily upon the help of volunteers in order to run kayaking and sailing whilst maintaining the low membership fees.

Through working with Volunteer Centre Westminster, we are able to provide a full programme of training and support for volunteers. This includes a free Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check (previously known as Criminal Records Bureau (CRB)), free training courses relevant to your role, and the opportunity to apply for funding to gain formal coaching qualifications. We will give you a full induction to your role, and ensure you enjoy your time spent volunteering with us.

How can you help out?

There are many essential tasks that need to be completed on a regular basis which we rely upon volunteers for. Some jobs are more specialist than others but we will ensure you receive clear instruction, support and supervision as appropriate.

If you wish to be involved then please contact us.

Are you a watersports instructor?

We are always seeking the support of qualified kayaking, sailing or powerboat Instructors and also assistance from those that are experienced in these sports. Westminster Boating Base was established in 1976 and operates on a daily basis on the tidal section of the River Thames - a very demanding piece of water with strong tidal flows. In return for your services, we offer the wealth of knowledge and experience of our staff.

Want to be a watersports instructor?

Instructor development scheme - introduction

Westminster Boating Base relies heavily upon the help of volunteers to keep costs low for our members and enable us to take on so many sessions and projects.

Over the years, WBB has trained its most enthusiastic and committed watersports participants through their personal skills awards and sent them on courses to gain nationally recognised National Governing Body (NGB) coaching awards in kayaking, canoeing, sailing and powerboating.

Many of these people are our current coaches and the instructors of tomorrow. Many of these people are now employed in the outdoor industry full-time or part-time, with us or across the country – even abroad.
If you have the time available and this appeals to you, then WBB can help you attain this goal.

Our requirements

You will need:

To be able to commit time on a regular basis (but not necessarily on a set schedule – we can be flexible to fit around your commitments)
To have already gained some basic personal skills certificates (RYA Level 2 dinghy or powerboat, BC Explore)
To undertake a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check
To be oozing with enthusiasm and committed to learning!
Courses & Qualifications
There are numerous certificates that you can gain in-house and then, when we think you are ready for it, we can front you the money for courses to gain NGB coaching certificates such as RYA Dinghy Instructor, RYA Powerboat Instructor and UKCC BC Paddlesports Insturctor and Core Coach courses. You will be making a commitment to repay the money in volunteering time as a qualified coach after the course(s).

Benefits to you
